The era of steamboating on Casco Bay began more than 170 years ago with the arrival of Captain Seward Porter's Kennebec at Portland. From that tentative experiment in pitting steam agaist sail, there eventually grew an extensive network of steamboat lines connecting the Casco Bay Islands with the mainland and to each other.
