Founded in 1822, the Maine Historical Society is the third oldest historical society in the United States. Located in Portland's downtown arts district, we maintain a growing museum, an incomparable library, and statewide educational resources. We provide guided tours for individuals and groups of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, boyhood home to poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Our purpose is to honor, preserve, and animate the rich history of Maine through exhibitions, tours, films, lectures, research, trips, and events. It's a place for all ages.
